City Of Naples Receives State Funding For Climate Adaptation & Mitigation Program
At the beginning of May, Governor DeSantis announced the award of grants totaling nearly $20 million in state funds for the Resilient Florida Program Planning Grants. To comply with new Resilient Florida state requirements to inform a state-wide vulnerability assessment dataset, the City requested grant funding from the Florida Department of Environmental Projection (FDEP) during the 2022 Legislative Session. The City has received 100% of funds requested in the amount of $387,255.
In June 2020, the City completed a Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment. This initial phase of identifying key public assets and operations that are at risk to climate change hazards was a critical first step to enhancing the City’s overall resilience to a changing climate. The Vulnerability Assessment involved a prioritization process to identify the timing and extent of the City’s exposure to sea level rise, coastal storms, precipitation, and extreme heat, to describe the City assets’ vulnerability (sensitivity to hazards and capacity to adapt) to each climate hazard, and to identify potential consequences of hazard impacts to the City’s people, ecosystems, infrastructure, and economy.
The funding received will be used to supplement the 2020 Vulnerability Assessment to consider additional sea level rise scenarios, inclusion of additional critical community facilities, evaluation of compound flooding due to a combination of rainfall and sea level rise, development of updated sea level rise inundation maps that correspond with the NOAA Intermediate-Low and NOAA Intermediate-High projections as required for the newly established FDEP criteria, and begin the City’s Adaptation Plan. Results of the revised Vulnerability Assessment will serve as the foundation for understanding key areas of the City that may be susceptible to changing climate conditions and may require adaptation actions to achieve urban resilience through the coming century. It will also lead into the development of a Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Plan that will emphasize a phased implementation plan of holistic adaptation strategies designed to protect the City from key vulnerabilities to public assets identified in the Vulnerability Assessment. Once completed, the Adaptation Plan will foster a resilient and vibrant city that can serve as a model for other communities throughout Southwest Florida and beyond.
Goodlette-Frank Road Median Landscaping Improvements
Beginning Monday, May 16, 2022, the City of Naples and Hannula Landscaping and Irrigation Inc. will begin construction within the medians on Goodlette-Frank Road between 7th Avenue North and Golden Gate Parkway. This is Phase 2 of the 2-year project to restore the median landscape along Goodlette-Frank Road from US41 to Golden Gate Parkway. Work will include the complete removal of trees and vegetation within the medians with restoration to follow the removal to include new trees, shrubs, groundcover, and new irrigation. Construction is expected to be completed in August 2022.
Traffic control and warning signs will be installed within the work zone. Most of the work will impact vehicular traffic and this traffic control will follow all guidelines set forth by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for maintenance of traffic (MOT).
Questions and concerns about this project should be directed to the City of Naples Community Services Department (239) 213-7120. City Arborist Heather Shields is the project manager for this project; she can be reached at (239) 213-7136 or hshields@naplesgov.com.
