Longtime Naples historian and food columnist Doris Reynolds dies at 92

Doris Reynolds prided herself on never missing a deadline in more than 30 years.
The longtime food columnist for the Naples Daily News died at her Naples home shortly after dinner Friday night. She was 92.
“I think one of the things that kept my mother alive was your newspaper,” Reynolds’ son, Kenneth Daniel, said Saturday. “She was so devoted to the newspaper and her articles.”
Reynolds wrote her weekly column, “Let’s Talk Food,” since 1986, answering readers’ questions about food and recipes while sharing information on culinary trends and history.
One of her columns, to be republished Wednesday, shares her memories about her first Thanksgiving in Naples shortly after she arrived in 1952 to be the first executive secretary and managing director of the Naples Chamber of Commerce.
When Doris relocated to Naples 65 years ago, she was invited to have Thanksgiving dinner in the old Gulf Hotel, formerly at Fifth Avenue South and Fourth Street South. In her column, she wrote about how the passing years did not diminish her fond memories of a simpler time, when Naples’ population was only about 2,000.
