Hurricane Irma made landfall Sunday afternoon on Marco Island after a nerve-wracking march toward Florida that overwhelmed emergency shelters and had Southwest Floridians bracing for storm surge flooding.
The National Hurricane Center reported that Irma slammed ashore as a Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph, the strongest storm to make landfall in Collier County since Hurricane Wilma in 2005.
